Dear AFS families,

It’s fall season and our Grade 1 classes have been engaging in some learning with pumpkins.  There are many ways of using pumpkins to engage students in math.  Please see Ms. Fogarty’s pumpkin math.

Pumpkin Grade 1

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!

Students are required to have indoor shoes.  This keeps our hallways and floor spaces safe and clean. Students in older grades must have indoor shoes as well.  If you need support in providing shoes or boots for your children, please let the office know.

Home Reading

Our home reading program is beginning in November.  Please see Ms. Hirji’s letter below.

Students in this classroom will be starting a home reading program as an extension of their reading in the classroom. Your child will be bringing home two books to read on Thursday evenings. Your child will receive a bag with two home reading books as well as a white logging sheet. Please sign and return the white logging sheet. You have a week to keep these books. All home reading books must be returned on Thursday in exchange for new books.

Kindergarten students attending the M/W group will receive their home reading books on the first Wednesday of the month. Kindergarten students attending the T/T group will receive their home reading books on the first Thursday of the month. All home reading books must be returned to the class by the end of the month. Kindergarten students will also receive two home reading books as well as a white logging sheet. Please sign this sheet and return it at the end of the month with the home reading books in exchange for new ones.

It is important for parents to sit with their children, read the books to them, listening to them read and offer assistance when necessary. These books are based on your child’s reading level. Beginning readers should point to each word asthey read.

Please give your child all the encouragement and support in order to make this an enjoyable experience for both of you.

Students who do not return their books will have a grace period of three weeks to find the book(s) before we require payment for the book(s). The home reading facilitator will let the teacher know and the teacher will send home a reminder to return the books.

Students, who loose their book(s), or who return book(s) that are damaged and cannot be kept in circulation, will have a grace period of three weeks to pay for a replacement book. The replacement cost of $5.00 will be charged to the parents PowerSchool account (Rycor). Students will not be issued any books until we receive payment.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Road Safety

We have noticed an increased number of parents doing U-turns in the middle of the street in front of the school as well as crossing the street between cars.  Please model traffic safety by using the crosswalks as we have an amazing Patrol team!  A reminder that the parking lot is not to be used to drop off and pick up students.  Thank you for helping to keep our community safe.

Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner! Your child is welcome to wear a costume or orange/black to school on Thursday, October 31.

At Annie Foote School we ask that everyone respects the following guidelines when selecting costumes to be worn at school:

  • Students must be able to participate in all regular learning in their classes (sit in their desk, participate in gym etc.)
  • Masks, coverings or make-up that results in staff being unable to identify students should not be worn.  We need to be able to identify students at all times.
  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, drugs or are revealing (undergarments or bathing suits) are not permitted.
  • Any fake weapons should not be brought to school.
  • Costumes that could be offensive or suggest a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, race or religion are not allowed.

As we have students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, we need to be mindful of creating a safe environment for all and think about how costume choice may impact others in the school.

Candy - We know that students learn best when they eat healthy food.  As such, we ask that parents limit the amount of candy sent to school before and after Hallowe’en.

Students are not to bring any candy or treats to share with the class for Halloween.  Although we know you mean well, there are factors such as food allergies that need to be considered.  Thank you.

We are looking forward to a great day on Thursday, October 31!
