Dear AFS Families,

The staff and students of Annie Foote School have been busy with various learning opportunities.

The grade 4's completed a winter walk to the wetlands a few weeks ago.  The students were able to observe the seasonal changes of the wetlands and surrounding area and compare it to the fall walk they did in September.  Through their experience, they engaged in discussions about their wonders and observations.  They discussed what ladybugs do to survive the winter, why there were no geese at the wetlands, and why some birds do not migrate.  They examined seed pods of different species of plants and considered how the plants survive the cold winters, as well as the insects and small rodents that were hibernating.  We saw a few empty nests in trees and saw the seeds of the dandelions we had noticed in the fall.  Most importantly, we took time to enjoy the nature we have and show respect to it by not breaking things or leaving trash from our snack behind.  Enjoy an outdoor walk with your children every chance you get!

Yesterday, we celebrated Literacy Week by participating in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read).  Several times throughout the day, music played over the intercom indicating it was time to read!

Several staff and students also dressed up as their favourite storybook characters!

Book Draw

This month’s virtue was Humility.  One student from each class was chosen by their teacher to pick out a book.  Congratulations!   February’s virtue is Kindness.

New Gate

We are thrilled to have a new gate by the Division 1 door by the playground.  The gate will remain closed during the school day as an extra step in keeping our students safe from being able to access the street.  The gate will never be locked so parents can still come through to drop off and pick up their children.  Thanks to our CBE Facilities team for making this happen!

Weather

The forecast calls for colder weather beginning this weekend.  Please dress your children in appropriate clothing including boots, scarves, mitts and toques.  Students go outside for lunch recess if the weather is -19 (with wind chill) or warmer.   Please keep in mind that the school grounds continue to be slippery.

Mark Your Calendars | Family Literacy/Numeracy Night

We are so excited to invite you to our annual Family Literacy/Numeracy Night on Thursday, February 27 from 5:30 – 7:00pm.  Our theme is SPACE!  Teachers set up stations with activities you can do at home.   If you wonder what your children can do at home besides be on a device, come and get some ideas! This year we will have a draw for two scooters and helmets – one for K-2 and one for Gr. 3-6.   Thank you to parent council for providing these wonderful prizes!

Casino | May 31/June 1

The Parents of Annie Foote Fund Raising Society is excited to share that we have been granted another casino event at ACE CASINO AIRPORT (40 Aero Crescent NE) on SATURDAY, MAY 31 and SUNDAY, JUNE 1. We are eligible for an event like this every eighteen to twenty four months. The funds raised from events like this is what enables us to provide students with field trips, in class speakers, new technology, school resources, and more, at little or no cost to families.

This is where you come in – WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! You do not need to have prior experience or have police clearance.  Volunteering at a casino can be a lot of fun. You’ll get a free meal (the food at this casino has been amazing in the past), and it’s a great way to meet other people from the Annie Foote School Community. We would love to see some new faces this year!

Information on the various positions will be available on the Annie Foote School website. Shifts each day will run from 11am-7pm, 6:30pm-3:30am, and 11pm-3:30am (this shift is only for the Count Room). We need nineteen volunteers (plus backups) each day. Please reach out to Leslie at afsparentcouncil@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering!
