AFS Weekly Message Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 | Islamic Heritage Month, Author Visit, Halloween, Supervision
Dear AFS Families
It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of October and Islamic Heritage Month. Ms. Hirji and our support staff created a demonstration panel and displayed a number of books in the learning commons to celebrate and appreciate the diversity within Canada’s Muslim communities. Students also had the opportunity to learn about Navrati, a Hindu holiday celebrated this year between October 15-24.
On Friday we were thrilled to welcome author Tololwa Mollel to visit our Grade 2 and 3 students. This visit was made possible through a grant with the Young Alberta Book Society. Mr. Mollel is a storyteller, dramatist, and an award-winning author of over twenty books for the young and not so young in English and in Swahili, the national language of his native African country of Tanzania.” The students enjoyed watching a video, keeping the beat with one of Mr. Mollel’s songs and listening to his stories from when he was a boy as they related to the books the students read this week in their classes, “Orphan Boy” and “The King and the Tortoise”.
Tomorrow we are looking forward to a fun day of Hallowe’en learning activities and a costume parade. A reminder that students may only bring in treats for themselves.
Supervision - The school provides outside supervision beginning at 8:50am. Please bring your children after 8:50, especially in colder weather as the school is not open to students before then.
Have a great week,
Heather
